Met Gala 2017: 6 Stunning Dresses That Could Be Paintings

The Met Gala, that most glamorous of meetings between the worlds of fashion and art, comes but once a year. This week’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit once again featured the sort of outrageous glamour and gowns you always expect from the art world’s glitziest fundraisers.

Fashion and art have always enjoyed a close relationship, one influencing the other for, well, about as long as humans have been wearing clothes and making art. And rarely is that connection clearer than at the Met Gala. Maybe it’s just us, but these six amazing looks could have sprung right off the canvas. Read on to see the dresses and the paintings they resemble.

Emily Ratajkowski

The model’s Marc Jacobs dress is so reminiscent of Van Gogh’s Starry Night, it’s kind of amazing.

Rihanna

Everyone is talking about Rihanna’s wild Comme des Garçons, um, “dress.” All those floral-patterned lily-pad things reminded us of Monet and his water lilies.

Aymeline Valade

The French model’s spangly blue Marni pantsuit is classic Klimt.

Tracee Ellis Ross

Tracee Ellis Ross is a wonderful actress and a beautiful human being, but dang if she isn’t wearing a Cézanne tablecloth.

Zendaya

Frida Kahlo would be proud of two looks here: Zendaya’s parrot-covered dress, and her expression of complete boredom with the whole thing.

Felicity Jones

The star of Rogue One looks like she could have stepped out of Seurat’s La Grande Jatte. That or she’s late for a very fashionable cotillion.
